Are Peptides Legal? Complete 2026 Status by Country

Last updated: May 18, 2026

Legal status overview

United States

FDA-approved peptide drugs are legal as prescription medications. The FDA Orange Book lists 80+ approved peptide drugs across endocrine, oncology, antimicrobial, and metabolic disease categories. Peptides not approved by the FDA can be legally sold as “research chemicals” for laboratory use only — the labels and marketing must indicate this and must not promote human use.

European Union and UK

Each member state has its own medicines regulator. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) maintains a list of centrally authorized medicines including most major peptide drugs. Research chemical sale rules vary; some EU countries are stricter than the US.

Australia (TGA)

Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) updated its rules significantly in 2022-2024. Many peptides previously available in compounding pharmacies are now Schedule 10 (prohibited substances) — including BPC-157, melanotan, and a range of GHRPs. Importation is restricted.

Canada

Health Canada regulates peptides under the Food and Drugs Act. Approved peptide drugs require prescription. Research-grade peptides are imported under research exemption.

The FDA’s “research chemical” framework

The “research peptide” framing is a legal positioning that allows sale for laboratory use. Vendors must:

 • Label products as “for research use only” or “not for human consumption”
 • Not market human therapeutic applications
 • Not make health claims

WADA-banned peptides

The World Anti-Doping Agency prohibits a wide range of peptides for competitive athletes:

 • All GHRPs (GHRP-2, GHRP-6, hexarelin, ipamorelin)
 • GHRH analogs (CJC-1295, sermorelin, tesamorelin)
 • BPC-157 (added 2022 under S0 non-approved substances)
 • IGF-1 and its analogs
 • Most growth-stimulating peptides

Compounding pharmacy peptides — current status

During 2024-2025 FDA-declared shortage of GLP-1 drugs (semaglutide, tirzepatide), compounding pharmacies legally produced compounded versions. The FDA declared the shortage resolved in early 2025, narrowing the legal basis for compounding. Many states have since restricted compounded GLP-1 sales.

Can I legally buy peptides online in the US?
Yes — peptides sold as “research chemicals” for laboratory use are legal to purchase. They are not approved by the FDA for human consumption.

Are peptides legal in Australia?
Australia has the strictest rules. Many peptides are Schedule 10 (prohibited for human use) since 2022-2024 TGA updates. FDA-approved prescription peptides are available with prescription.

Is BPC-157 legal?
In the US, yes as a research chemical. WADA bans it for competitive sport. Australia’s TGA Schedule 10 prohibits human use.

Are compounded GLP-1s still legal?
The legal basis narrowed in 2025 when the FDA declared the shortage resolved. Many states have since restricted compounded sales. Check your jurisdiction.
